At Tesla, Karpas manages a team of senior machine learning scientists and engineers and recently took a few months off. His departure comes amid a spike in Autopilot-related accidents. According to federal data released last month, since June 2021,Tesla vehicles account for nearly 70% of reported crashes involving advanced driver assistance systems. Officials cautioned that the data was incomplete and was not intended to indicate which automaker’s system might be the safest.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk thanked Karpas for his contributions and said he was honored to work with him.
