Business Insider reached out to a former Tesla employee who had just been laid off and confirmed his identity and occupation. The employee spoke on condition of anonymity about how he was laid off that day.

The following describes the entire process of the employee’s layoff that day in a first-person tone:

I work in Tesla IT and was laid off earlier this month. Before that, I had been working for 3 months. The day I was fired, I was walking home from the factory thinking, “Wow, what a mess.” I didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye to my colleagues.

Then, I thought about all the freezes in tech industry news and started worrying about how I could get another job.

I was reminded of a scene from the movie “The Wolf of Wall Street”: the company disbanded and everyone was crying. It’s a lot like what I saw when I was laid off at Tesla’s California factory two weeks ago.

Frequent danger signs

That day, when I got to the office, I put down my stuff and went to get myself some cereal. When I came back, I saw that my supervisor and her supervisor were online because they had green ticks next to their names. This is already unusual as they usually arrive for work hours later, but it’s still early 9am.

A few minutes later, my supervisor walked in, put down her things, grabbed her laptop, and left without saying a word. This is yet another red flag. My coworker also just arrived and he told me that one of my coworkers was fired the day before. I know they’ve been at Tesla for many years and I’ve only been here for a few months.

Next, I started noticing more and more red flags. I saw security near the gate and they were sending people out. I also saw people crying in the halls but not sure what they were crying for. Then, I was reminded of an email Musk sent last week saying he was laying off 10% of his full-time workforce.

Then I got an email from my supervisor asking if I could go to the conference room with her, we needed to talk. That’s when I realized they were going to fire me.

Inside the Tesla factory

I never thought I’d be fired

I walked into the conference room and saw that she was already sitting there with her laptop. She told me to close the door and immediately log into Zoom, the videoconferencing software, for an online meeting with another supervisor and an HR employee. Then they told me they were going to fire me because the company was going to lay off people.

I was amazed and thought someone else was fired because I had only recently been hired. Could it be that the company hired me with great difficulty just to let me go?

When I left the meeting room, the security was already waiting outside with my stuff. Their cooperation makes people feel very tacit understanding.

I handed over my badge and the security escorted me out. When I left, I saw other people in the conference room and security waiting outside. The security guards were in plainclothes, but their identities and what was going on were obvious.

someone is crying

When I went to the lobby, I saw several people crying. After going out, through the windows of the building, I saw more people in the conference room, holding tissue boxes and wiping tears. I recognize some of them as colleagues on work visas, so I don’t know what their current situation is.

Tesla gave me an Uber voucher to get me home, but I drove myself. While I was still outside the factory, I sent a quick email to say goodbye to my colleagues. I wrote that it was a pleasure working with all of you, and I am sorry for not being able to say goodbye to all of you in person. By midnight that day, I lost access to my email.

On the drive home, my brain was racing, trying to figure out what to do next. I still don’t understand why they’re laying off the people they just hired, I wish I didn’t take the job in the first place. I went through four interviews to get the job, and now it feels like I’ve entered a long and difficult job search process right from the start.

still love musk

Maybe you can’t think of it, I actually really like Musk. I just wish he would listen more. Many were unhappy with his change of work policy. His goals are really lofty.I’ve seen employees sleep on the couch in the factory because they need to work 12 hours a day, 4 days a week to achieve their goals.Working like this all day puts a heavy load on their bodies.

But I still think that this company and Musk are doing good things for the world.
