IT House reported on June 13 that LG Display is reportedly trying to become a microOLED panel supplier for Apple’s new generation of mixed reality headsets before Apple officially launches its VR/AR headset.

Previous rumors said that Apple is developing some kind of AR or VR headset and operating system realityOS, and the new machine will support mixed reality functions and can be used for any purpose.

LG Display is preparing for a possible second-generation mixed reality device from Apple, sources at TheElec said, and has ordered deposition equipment from Sunic System to help the company produce microOLED panels.

Coming from IT Home, Apple product analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously predicted that Apple will begin engineering verification and testing of AR/VR headsets in the third quarter of this year, and will start accepting consumer reservations in the second quarter of next year, and will begin global development in the second quarter of next year. It goes on sale before the conference.

It may be too late for current supply chain players to start preparing for a device to be released sometime next year, and Sony LG Display is apparently trying to join the list of suppliers for next-generation MR headsets.

For the unreleased original model, it was previously thought that Apple would use a microOLED panel from Sony. In 2020, Apple reportedly asked Sony to provide half-inch panels with a resolution of 1280 x 960.

“Apple’s AR glasses are said to be launched with its second-generation VR headset by the end of 2024”
