Which MacBook Pro to buy in 2022. Comparison of MacBook Pro 13” and MacBook Pro 14”

At WWDC 2022, Apple unveiled the next generation of its M2 chips. To demonstrate the capabilities of the new processor, the base line of laptops has been updated. Macbook Air pros and cons we analyzed in a separate article, now let’s look at the new Pro version in comparison with its 14-inch counterpart. The differences between them are not only in screen sizes and built-in chipsets, but also in a set of ports, additional memory configurations, screen technologies and much more.

These computers only formally belong to the same series. In fact, the new Pro is closer to Macbook Air than to their older brothers. Let’s see if it’s worth changing the 14″ Pro to the new 13″ on the M2 chip.

Differences MacBook Pro 13 from MacBook Pro 14

If you use a dark wallpaper, then the cutout on the MacBook Pro 14 will be almost invisible.

Looking at the names of laptops, you can immediately see their first difference – the screen diagonals. The 13″ model has 13.3 inch screen with a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels, a brightness of 500 nits and a density of 227 ppi, while the 14-inch model is equipped with a 14.2-inch mini-LED display with a resolution of 3024×1964 pixels, a brightness of 1000 nits and a density of 254 ppi. As you can see, the models have completely different screens.

Display The 14-inch model is more tailored for any professional cases due to greater clarity and brightness. Also, the older computer supports the technology ProMotion with a screen refresh rate of 120 Hz. Processing images on such a screen is a pleasure. At the same time, the screen in the 13-inch model repeats that in the new Air, except for the diagonal. It’s simple quality screenbut far from professional.

Per Macbook Pro 13 performance meets the new M2 chip, which includes the same 8 cores as the M1, but with greater energy efficiency and the Media Engine, which was introduced in the M1 Pro and M1 Max for processing, encoding and decoding video, including video ProRes. It also now supports up to 24 GB of RAM in the maximum configuration.

Macbook Pro 14 inches equipped with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. The M1 Pro is available in 8 or 10-core processor options, while the M1 Max has a 10-core processor. The Pro variant supports up to 32GB of RAM, while the Max variant supports up to 64GB.

In a single core test Geekbench M2 scored 1869 points against 1738 and 1747 for Pro and Max, respectively. In the multi-core test, the M1 Pro and M1 Max score 12009 and 12165 points against 8900 for the M2. Benchmarks are often not indicative, but Macbook Pro 14 performance should have been higher in all respects.

With the MacBook Pro 13, Apple has retained the familiar 720p camera. The spectacle, of course, is disappointing compared to the Air and Pro 14 with a 1080p camera. Separately, it should be noted that a good camera in a 14-inch had to pay for a cutout in the screen. For some, this may be critical enough to pass by this model.

Looking at the ports that Cupertino equipped their laptops with, you can immediately conclude which one is really professional. The 13-inch model received two USB-C ports on one side and a 3.5mm audio jack on the other side. The 14-inch laptop was equipped with a MagSafe charger connector with support for fast charging, two USB-C ports and a 3.5 mm jack on one side, HDMI, one USB-C and a card reader on the other side. Questions about which computer it is more convenient to connect peripherals to, looking at the set of ports, disappear by themselves.

The notch in the 14-inch model quite often overlaps the usable space in the status bar

The base version of the 14-inch model comes with 512 GB of internal memory, while the 13-inch has only 256 GB. The largest configuration of the 13-inch model stops at 2 TB, while the 14-inch model boasts 8 TB in the top version.

Prices start at $1299 for the 13″ MacBook Pro and $1999 for the 14″ MacBook Pro.
If you’re a graphics pro, be it video or photography, then it’s best to look at the 14-inch model. You will have a better screen, better performance, a decent set of ports and memory sets that allow you to store everything you need on the internal drive.
