Disney/Pixar’s new film prank Lightyear coming to the cinema soon. On June 16, 2022, Buzz Lightyear entertains us with his space adventures. But that won’t be the case in all parts of the world, because the story of the children’s film doesn’t seem to go down well everywhere. The film will not be shown in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Malaysia, Indonesia and other countries in the Middle East and Asia. According to the South China Morning Post, it probably won’t be shown in China either. And all because of a kiss.

Pixar shows a controversial kiss

The animated film Lightyear follows the life of the “real” Buzz Lightyear, who rose to fame in the Pixar universe as an astronaut and eventually got his own action figure featured in the popular toy story– Filming went on adventures. The story told so far seems very classic: Buzz and his crew have to navigate an alien planet in order to save the galaxy. However, the film does not meet established media standards in some countries. The reason for this is said to be a kiss between crew member Alisha Hawthorne and another woman.

A kiss in protest

The kiss itself was reportedly edited out by Pixar itself during the making of the film. Despite their relationship, the two women were only supposed to hug. But Pixar reinstated the kiss after Disney showed a rather muted response to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law. Pixar was very critical of Disney’s initial refusal to comment on the law.

Florida’s Parents’ Rights to Schooling Act, as it’s officially titled, prohibits talking about sexual orientation and gender identity “to teach in a manner that is not age or developmentally appropriate for students” is. This applies to kindergarten and elementary school children. According to critics, this wording makes it possible to apply the law to older children.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is a Republican, countered that the only thing that would be banned was the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity in the official curriculum. Should children nevertheless ask about these topics, teachers can continue to speak about them spontaneously. However, if a teacher answers a question about sexual diversity or does not express themselves in an age-appropriate manner, parents can sue the school in question from July.
