The oceans play an important role in regulating the climate and contribute to storing a considerable part of the carbon released into the atmosphere. Last Thursday, a coalition was formed by nine American countries, including the United States, to protect the Pacific Ocean.

The oceans play an important role in the effects of climate change

This initiative was launched by Chile on the sidelines of the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, where environmental protection was one of the topics discussed. ” We celebrate multilateralism and the opportunity that dialogue offers to build a better world. The oceans are the main natural carbon sinks and as such play a crucial role in the effects of climate change said Chilean President Gabriel Boric when signing the agreement.

The initiative was supported by the representatives of Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Canada, Mexico as well as by the American presidential special envoy for the climate, John Kerry.

Marine protected areas

The nine member countries of the coalition plan to create legally recognized marine protected areas, from Chile to Canada. These delimited spaces will be created with the aim of protecting unique marine species, increasing tourism opportunities and promoting the sustainable development of coastal communities.

We must work better to protect our seas because marine species know no borders (…) It is a cooperation agreement. We have established common areas of protection. It’s not about not taking advantage of marine resources, it’s about exploring those resources with rationality and sustainability said Costa Rican President Rodrigo Cháves.

As a reminder, the Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth. Unfortunately, it is the victim of massive pollution and is exploited by mining companies for deposits, thus causing a loss of species and a degradation of ecosystems.
