Now that the iPadOS 16 public beta is available for download to anyone, some curious iPad enthusiasts will no doubt be interested in installing the public beta on their device.
As usual with beta system software, let’s assume that the iPadOS 16 public beta will not be as stable as the final version of the software, meaning that things like crashes, bugs, and apps not working properly are normal. For this reason, only advanced users should run the beta, and preferably on a secondary device that is not your primary hardware.
The iPadOS 16 beta includes some exciting new features, including a new multi-tasking interface called Stage Manager, available only on the iPad with M1, the ability to edit and unsend iMessages, the inclusion of the iPad Weather app, Safari tab groups, and tab pinning, the ability to connect a Nintendo JoyCon to an iPad, etc. For those wondering, the lock screen widget customization feature is limited to iPhone with iOS 16 and will not be available on iPad. The iPadOS 16 beta is most appealing to iPads with M1 or better, so users of earlier devices may not be thrilled with the extra features.
Requirements for the iPadOS 16 Public Beta
Make sure your iPad supports iPadOS 16 and has at least 20 GB of free storage to install the update.
You’ll also want to back up your iPad to iCloud, as well as your Mac with Finder or iTunes on PC so you can zip the backup and downgrade if you want, without losing any data.
