Ming-Chi Kuo has once again entered the dance of rumors and predictions around the potential 15-inch MacBook (Air, or not). According to its sources, this Mac could offer the choice between two second-generation Apple Silicon chips. While he hasn’t heard of a possible 12-inch MacBook yet…
It’s like a big game of ping-pong between Ming-Chi Kuo, Ross Young, and Mark Gurman. The first has carved out a solid reputation as a connoisseur of Apple’s supply chains, the second specializes in the production of slabs, and the third, a journalist for Bloomberg now, very regularly releases proven information thereafter.
A 15-inch MacBook with the choice between two chips
At the beginning of the year, the second advanced that Apple would be preparing a MacBook Air, equipped with a slab of approximately 15 inches. Today it’s Ming-Chi Kuo’s turn to make his contribution and announce that, according to him, this new laptop could enter mass production during the first half of the first half of 2023. , for marketing which could take place during the second quarter of 2023.
But the analyst does not stop there. According to him, still, this MacBook would offer two optional processors, an M2, with a 35 W adapter, and an M2 Pro with a 67 W adapter.
Prediction updates:
1. New 15″ MacBook would go to mass production in mid-1H23, and launch date may be 2Q23 or later.
2. New 15″ MacBook may offer two CPU options, M2 (with 35W adapter) & M2 Pro (with 67W adapter).
3. I haven’t heard of any plans for rumored 12″ MacBook yet. https://t.co/zm09nMvG7R— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) June 15, 2022
The possibility of embedding two different processors in the same machine implies, a priori, that there will be a model fanless with the M2, and a model with fans for the M2 Pro. However, since the transition to Apple Silicon chips, the MacBook Air uses passive cooling – which does not mean that Apple is prohibited from integrating fans into a MacBook Air, especially if it is much larger.
Moreover, shortly before the WWDC, Mark Gurman specified that Apple has already had a MacBook Air project in its pipeline for a long time with a 15.2-inch screen. A product which would have finally been put aside for reasons of difficulty of supply and to leave the teams time to concentrate on the new MacBook Air M2, introduced on June 6, and equipped with a slab of 13.6. inches.
Air or not Air?
Ming-Chi Kuo had already specified some time ago that this 15-inch model would not necessarily be stamped MacBook Air. In other words, Apple could take advantage of its control over its Apple Silicon chips to reintroduce a MacBook range, which would no longer necessarily be thought of as an ultraportable range, as was the case with little success between 2015 and 2019. It would therefore be a form of back to basics, with MacBooks placed there to form a triptych with Pros and Airs. Fingers crossed that their raison d’être is to embody the mainstream Mac at an affordable price.
Especially since this range could perhaps include two models. Last week, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who is often well-informed about Apple’s doings, said his sources were telling him that a 12-inch MacBook is in the works, but we don’t know if it’s available. it’s an Air, Pro, or other model.
If the Bloomberg journalist was still quite evasive on this point, Ming-Chi Kuo is much more frank and writes simply: “I haven’t heard of any plans for a 12-inch MacBook yet”. Time for the big return of the PowerBook…
