Microsoft is testing the new search in the taskbar in the current Insider. I can’t understand the reason myself, but there were probably requests that you would like to have a broader search in the taskbar again.

It is interesting in this context that Microsoft is currently testing two taskbars. If you have Windows 11 25158 installed, you can look under C:WindowsSystemApps. There is the

MicrosoftWindows.Client.Core_cw5n1h2txyewy

and the

MicrosoftWindows.Client.39072097_cw5n1h2txyewy

. FireCube assumes that Microsoft could then also change the overflow in the taskbar. We reported about it in February. But back to the search. It can be activated in all variants.

And that’s how it works:

  • Download and unzip the new ViVeTool
  • It is best to right-click on the folder in which the ViVeTool is located and click “Open in Terminal” while holding down Ctrl + Shift. Then the terminal will be opened immediately as an administrator and with the correct path.
  • For PowerShell: .vivetool /enable /id:39072097 /variant: copy it and then the respective number immediately after the colon.
    • 1 and 2 = Search can be seen as text
    • 3 = magnifying glass over a globe can be seen
    • 4 = A large globe with a small magnifying glass are visible
    • 5 = Search the web as text are visible. (Similar to the view from Windows 10)

After the command has been confirmed with Enter, it is sufficient to restart explorer.exe in the task manager. The change is then visible. The picture shows that the small mini-menu can only be seen on the icon (versions 3 and 4) when the mouse is over. At 1,2 and 5 this mini menu is not active.

There are currently no settings for this. But since Microsoft is currently tinkering around and is certainly waiting for feedback, we will probably have to wait for a few new insider versions. As a little info afterwards: The ID 39072097 is as SBBS displayed when searching in the ViVeTool.

If you want to deactivate this new search display again, simply enter this command and then restart explorer.exe:

  • .vivetool /disable /id:39072097
