IT House July 16 news, Rocky Linux officially announced that the Rocky Linux 9.0 operating system is generally available as a direct replacement for CentOS Linux and CentOS Stream.

Free distribution source code based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 (RHEL 9) operating system family,Rocky Linux 9.0 features GNOME 40 as the default desktop environment, support for DAX operations in XFS for direct access to byte-addressable persistent memory, and the “eager write” mount option in NFS to help reduce latency.

In terms of security, the Rocky Linux 9.0 series disables root user authentication using a password via SSH by default to prevent attackers from using brute force password attacks to gain access, and supports OpenSSL 3.0.

Other notable changes include an updated Cockpit web console with an improved performance metrics page to better identify the cause of spikes in CPU, memory, disk, and network resource usage. Instead of iproute2, use mptcpd or the MultiPath TCP daemon to configure MultiPath TCP endpoints and support for key files in NetworkManager to store new connection profiles.

Rocky Linux 9.0 also ships with some of the latest runtimes and compilers, including GCC 11.2.1, LLVM (13.0.1), Rust (1.58.1), and Go (1.17.1), a package consisting of GCC 11.2.1 Update toolchain. GNU C Library 2.34 and GNU Binutils 2.35, and many other great open source technologies, including Python 3.9, PHP 8.0, Perl 5.32, Ruby 3.0.3, and Node.js 16.

Rocky Linux 9.0 is now available fromOfficial websiteDownload 64-bit (x86_64), AArch64 (ARM 64-bit), PowerPC 64-bit Little Endian (ppc64le) and IBM system Z (s390x) hardware architectures: Minimal, DVD and Boot editions. Cloud mirrors can also be downloaded.

Existing Rocky Linux 8.0 users will be able to install and upgrade to the Rocky Linux 9 series, but developers are strongly advised to do a fresh install. Rocky Linux 8.0 will continue to be supported until May 31, 2029, while Rocky Linux 9.0 will be supported until May 31, 2032.
