This is a first for the world of archeology. Indeed, archaeologists have begun the excavation of a tomb linked to King Arthur. Explanations.
Situated on a hill overlooking the Golden Valley and the Wye Valley in Herefordshire, England, the king arthur stone is currently being analyzed by a team of archaeologists from the University of Manchester. At present, only the large stones of the inner chamber still remain. The chamber is formed of nine vertical stones and a large stone weighing about 25 tons.
In order to study more closely this site linked to the king arthur since the 13th century and dating from 3,700 BC to 2,700 BC, archaeologists have mowed the grass around the stone. Enough to expose the stratigraphy there and to identify all the archaeological remains.
Specialists hope that these new excavations will reveal remains similar to those already found in monuments in the region, such as flint shards, pottery or arrowheads. This would provide us with new information about the tomb builders of the time and a better understanding of the original size and shape of Arthur’s Stone. “Arthur’s Stone is one of the most important Stone Age monuments in the country, and this dig offers a truly rare and exciting chance for the public to come and see archeology in action”, explained Ginny Slade, head of volunteers at English Heritage.
