The final end of Internet Explorer is sealed: after almost 27 years, Microsoft is pulling the plug on a browser that has long been an integral part of Windows. The move comes as little surprise given the number of users of IE over the past few months.

It was a gradual death, wasting away in a coma, but now Microsoft is ending life-support measures: Internet Explorer is dead. After almost 27 years, there is no longer any official support for the browser, which has been a loyal companion to Windows users for many years was, but since the release of Windows 10 has been almost completely pushed out of the picture.

Internet Explorer user numbers are less than one percent

Meanwhile, the demise of Internet Explorer comes as no surprise. Microsoft had already replaced the browser with Microsoft Edge in 2015 with the release of Windows 10, after which the number of users of IE continued to plummet. The proportion of users worldwide across all platforms averaged just 0.5 percent for Microsoft’s outdated software over the past twelve months.

In order for the last users who are still using Internet Explorer to switch to Microsoft Edge, the company will in future display a notification under Windows prompting them to switch browsers. This message informs users that Internet Explorer will be switched off with a future Windows update and encourages them to switch to Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft Edge still offers IE mode

Anyone who makes the change in connection with this notification can automatically transfer bookmarks, passwords, browser history, cookies and other data to Microsoft Edge – as you are used to from other browsers. A manual import is of course also possible.

Exactly when Microsoft will completely remove Internet Explorer from Windows is not yet certain. However, there is a workaround for websites that only run with Internet Explorer due to their advanced age: Microsoft Edge offers an IE mode, and it should remain available at least until 2029.
