Egypt’s prestigious Al-Azhar University has launched an initiative calling on engaged couples to save money by having modest weddings, dowries and cancelling their honeymoons. Al-Azhar’s Islamic Research Academy announced an initiative to combat extortionate cultural customs surrounding marriage, which it says has contributed to a lack of marriage in young adults.
