At TennoCon 2022, Digital Extremes announced a new project. It takes place in a fantasy world and is directed by the previous “Warframe” director.

Steve Sinclair served as director of Warframe for a long time. He is now stepping down from his post to focus on the development of the newly announced open world adventure, Soulframe.

The name already suggests that there is a connection to the online action game released in 2013. However, it is not the successor, but rather the sister of “Warframe”. The developer describes the game as a “mirror version of the Warframe universe”. Expect a unique twist on the sci-fi genre.

Sinclair explains the differences to “Warframe”: Cooperative PvE battles and procedurally generated environments should remain important gameplay elements. Instead of gunfights, however, the focus should be on hand-to-hand combat. The developers want to significantly reduce the speed, which will make the movement feel more sluggish. In addition, exploration should play an important role and the environment should appear more alive.

The plot deals, among other things, with the destruction of the environment. The development team was inspired by the anime film “Princess Mononoke” and the fantasy film “The Neverending Story”.

The player should feel the negative effects of the industry on the environment: “The idea is that the world itself is a little angry about what has been done to it, and the ground underneath changes throughout the day. So there will be a procedural structure in the cave networks and chasms and so forth under the world.”

A very early announcement

“Soulframe” is still in a very early stage of development. While the key concepts have been around since 2019, few developers — mostly artists — were involved with the project until earlier this year.

Sinclair admits that the announcement is actually premature. However, you want to be transparent to the community and not withhold anything from it. And further information about the project should still be announced as early as possible. A trial version may be available in a year.

A trademark protection of “Soulframe” appeared two months ago. Therefore, the announcement is not entirely surprising.

It is not yet known for which platforms the game will be released. As with “Warframe”, several consoles as well as the PC will probably be supplied.
