Scientists want to build sun protection for the earth. A huge shield of bubbles can protect the earth from global warming.

A research team at the American university MIT has developed a proposal that is said to be able to protect the earth from global warming in the future. It is about something called “Space Bubbles” which would be a huge sun shield that is put together with large bubbles of silicon or other suitable material.

The idea is that the shield would reflect some of the sun’s rays and thus lower the earth’s average temperature. On the project’s website you write:

“Geoengineering might be our final and only option. Yet, most geoengineering proposals are earth-bound, which poses tremendous risks to our living ecosystem. If we deflect 1.8% of incident solar radiation before it hits our planet, we could fully reverse today’s global warming. “

The idea is that the bubbles for the shield would be manufactured on site in space to reduce transport costs. No matter how much you would save on transport costs, a project like this would probably be very expensive to carry out. MIT has not stated what it thinks it would cost to build a sunshade like this.

This is not the first time someone has suggested that we block the sun with a shield to lower the earth’s temperature. Two years ago, the Swedish researchers Christer Fuglesang and John Hassler suggested that it would be possible to build a shield with parasol constructions that could protect the earth from the sun.
