If you installed the iPadOS 16 beta on your iPad and now regret it, perhaps because it has too many bugs or lacks the features you were hoping for, such as Stage Manager, you can uninstall iPadOS 16 from your iPad and return to iPadOS 15.

This guide shows you how to upgrade from iPadOS 16 beta back to iPadOS 15 stable builds.

It is important to note that this particular approach involves completely erasing data from the iPad. If you have a backup from iPadOS 15, you will be able to restore your data from it, otherwise the device will be set up as new and won’t have any of your data on it.

You’ll need a Mac, a Lightning cable, and an internet connection to complete the downgrade. We’re assuming you’re using an iPad with Face ID, such as iPad Pro, iPad Air, or iPad Mini.

How to Downgrade iPadOS 16 Beta to iPadOS 15

Keep in mind that this approach wipes the iPad to remove iPadOS 16 and restore iPadOS 15. If you don’t want to wipe all data on the iPad, then don’t proceed.

  1. Open Finder on Mac
  2. Connect your iPad to your Mac with a Lightning cable.
  3. Put your iPad Pro into Recovery Mode by following this sequence: press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Power/Lock button until iPad enters Recovery Mode.
  4. A dialog box will appear on your Mac screen informing you that a device has been detected that needs to be updated or restored, giving you the option to cancel, update or restore – select Restore to begin the process of migrating from iPadOS 16 to iPadOS 15
  5. After the recovery has started, wait for the process to complete, this may take some time.

When finished, the iPad will boot up again with iPadOS 15 as if it were brand new, completely erased, and with a fresh install of iPadOS 15.

During installation, you can choose to restore your iPad with an iPadOS 15 compatible backup, if available. If you don’t have an iPadOS 15 compatible backup available, you won’t be able to restore your data. If you are in this situation and don’t want to lose your stuff and the only available backup is the backup from ipadOS 16, then you should upgrade to iPadOS 16 and restore from that backup so you can keep your stuff. Yes, it’s not an ideal situation, but that’s the nature of beta system software.
