From next month, it will no longer be possible to buy prepaid cards for mobile phones and / or mobile broadband anonymously. The new rules are introduced to give the police the opportunity to link a person to a mobile number, for example to get permission for secret telephone tapping, writes TT.
The new rules mean that those who buy a prepaid card must state their name, address and social security number or equivalent identification number. It will not be permitted to transfer a prepaid card to someone else unless this is then re-registered with the new holder. However, there are exceptions which mean that the prepaid card can be used temporarily by others or by a close relative.
From 1 August, operators and prepaid card sellers must start registering the buyer’s personal data. For those who already have anonymous prepaid cards, these must be registered before 1 February 2023 or at the latest the next time the prepaid card is refilled.
