July 17, 2002: Apple releases the best consumer computer iMac G4, with a flat 17-inch LCD display, the parameters of which seemed incredibly huge for the time. Steve Jobs described this all-in-one Apple computer as “simply breathtaking with a 17-inch flat screen that seems to float in the air in front of you.”

Its design miraculously combined the clean minimalism of later Apple products with the appeal of the iMac G3. It was really unlike all other computers of that time.

iMac G4: powerful and unusual

The appearance of the device echoes the nature-inspired hippie culture that was close to Jobs. Perhaps it is to her that we owe the new look of the iMac, which Jobs came up with with Apple’s chief designer, Jony Ive. A new generation device, similar to a sunflower, thanks to a movable head on a cantilevered metal bracket, could be rotated to any angle. Moreover, the design of the bracket was carefully thought out to eliminate the risk of falling.

In terms of specs, the iMac G4, in addition to the 17-inch screen, was equipped with an 800MHz PowerPC G4 processor, an Nvidia GeForce4 MX GPU, an 80GB hard drive, and a SuperDrive for CDs and DVDs.

The 17-inch iMac G4 started at $1999. A few years later, Apple released an even larger display for it, introducing a 20-inch screen.
