June 17, 1978: Steve Jobs’ first child, Lisa Brennan-Jobs, was born on this day.

By the time Lisa was born, 23-year-old Jobs and his high school girlfriend Chris-Anne Brennan were no longer a couple, and for several years Jobs stubbornly denied paternity before eventually acknowledging his daughter.

When Lisa was born, Jobs was working at Apple, which was in its infancy. He agreed to pay $385 a month for child support, and then $500 when he became a multimillionaire.

In the end, Jobs matured to the point of apologizing for his past actions and developed a normal relationship with his daughter.

When he passed away in 2011, he left her a multimillion-dollar legacy, but Lisa still declined an interview with Jobs biographer Walter Isaacson.

While studying at Harvard University, Lisa wrote for The Harvard Crimson and also published in many magazines. A few years ago, she released a paperback memoir of her growing up.

Naming the computer Lisa

In 1983, Steve Jobs denied that he had named a computer after Lisa Brennan, because the paternity lawsuit was in full swing and such a recognition could hurt the business.

Instead, Jobs claimed that “Lisa” stands for “Local Integrated System Architecture”, to which some Apple engineers joked that the name should mean “Let’s make an acronym”.

In his official biography, Jobs admitted to Isaacson, “Apparently the computer was named after my daughter.”
