The all new MacBook Air with M2 and MacBook Pro 14″ and 16″ with M1 Pro and M1 Max processors are impressive machines by most hardware standards, but not everyone is impressed by the notch that takes up part of the top of the screen. The notch holds the front camera and slides down to the top of the display. So what if you don’t like how the notch looks? Are you stuck with it? Not really.

Luckily for notch haters, there’s an app called TopNotch that hides the notch on your display using a simple but ingenious method of turning the menu bar black to match the notch. This effectively makes The Notch blend into the menu bar, making it much more subtle.

TopNotch is completely free to download, runs quietly in the background and updates when you change your wallpaper. It’s even configurable with dynamic desktops if you’re using them.

Just launch the app and your display notch will drop into a black menu bar, serving as a kind of camouflage.

Here’s what your menu bar and Notch will look like with TopNotch running, where it’s fairly hidden:

And here is how the menu bar and Notch look by default, which is clearly visible:

This app is so inventive that it makes you wonder why Apple didn’t make the menu bar completely black again to hide Notch, but for now the menu bar remains transparent (in some macOS history, the menu bar was once black as a prequel). to full dark mode). But then again, similar apps and wallpapers that hide the notch existed for the notch model of the iPhone before most people just gave up and got used to it.

The display notch, which is a little annoying, will likely become irrelevant for most users once they get used to the new MacBook Pro, similar to how users got used to the notch on newer iPhone models. It’s clear at this point that Notch has become sort of a hallmark of Apple’s modern design, and there are even rumors that it will be included in future redesigned MacBook computers. So if you hate Notch, it’s time to get comfortable with him, obviously it’s going to happen after a while.
