Brussels’ decision to harmonize smartphone charging sockets around USB-C has encouraged a group of US senators to call for a similar strategy for the United States.

From autumn 2024, all phones, cameras and tablets sold in the European Union will have to have a USB-C port for their charging function (later will come the turn of laptops). This decision taken by Brussels a few days ago must still be formalized after the summer.

The Lightning port doomed: USB-C as a universal charging port almost endorsed in Europe

Three Democratic senators, including two former presidential candidates — Elizabeth Warren and Bernard Sanders — as well as Edward J. Markey, drew inspiration from it in a addressed mail at the Department of Commerce. They urge his secretary to set up a plan to bring electronics players to follow the European example on American soil.

The trio does not expressly cite USB-C, however it develops the same arguments to justify a broad reflection. This involves harmonizing chargers, improving interoperability between products from competing platforms, reducing waste and pollution by ensuring that switching from one ecosystem to another no longer requires separating from its cables.

We cannot allow the consumer electronics industry to prioritize proprietary and inevitably obsolete charging technology at the expense of consumer protection and environmental health. write the three senators, calling on the competent authorities to quickly address this issue.

Apple is not mentioned more than the types of connectors in this missive, inevitably its Lightning port will be the first and main victim of any policy of harmonization. However, the European decision which leaves no room for any derogation has probably already pushed Apple to integrate this data into its future products, as has been already mentioned by rumours.

iPad Air USB-C

It is hard to see the manufacturer selling USB-C iPhones on one continent and staying with the Lightning on the others. Especially after having almost completed this migration on iPad with the Pro, Air and mini.
