At the end of 2020, Microsoft acquired the eSports platform and organization of online tournaments, Smash.gg. Almost two years later, Sony did the same and acquired the Repeat.gg platform to make eSport accessible to as many people as possible.

Platforms, what for?

If we refer to the sale of the online tournament organization platform, Smash.gg, it is difficult to imagine that two years after the transaction, almost nothing has been done to optimize this purchase on the Microsoft side. . The “new opportunities” of the press release at the time have so far yielded nothing concrete. Could PlayStation change things up?

By making the surprise acquisition of the Repeat.gg platform, Sony seems to be moving its pawns and also embarking on a niche that consoles have long abandoned to the PC. While computer players have long been accustomed to this competitive practice, on consoles it remains to be built. By acquiring Repeat.gg, Sony hopes to change the situation and make the eSports experience more open:

At PlayStation, our vision for esports has always been to break down barriers allowing players to compete at all levels. Together with the talented team at Repeat.gg, we are excited to explore more ways for gamers to engage in competitive gaming and expand the breadth of our esports offerings. This is just the start of our journey and we look forward to sharing more updates with our community in the future.

Good news for platform users, therefore, the buyout does not mean excluding players. Repeat.gg will remain perfectly accessible to PC players and will gradually open up to other home consoles such as Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. The two competitors are opening up opportunities in a field that they have somewhat neglected in favor of integrating studios, but there is no doubt that these investments are not intended to remain untapped. Moreover, remember that Microsoft had registered a new name a few months ago. Sony’s move could therefore shake things up soon.
