While Matter hasn’t been implemented yet, there is a new update for Thread’s edge routers. Today’s new update, Thread 1.3.0, will now allow Thread devices to work with any other Thread edge router, including the Apple HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K.

As the universal smart home standard, Matter makes setting up your smartphone easier than ever. Thread, along with Wi-Fi, will be the primary wireless protocol that Matter will run on. Whenever Matter comes out, perhaps later this year, a Thread-enabled Matter device will be able to join current thread networks via edge routers.

According to The Verge, Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini, Nanoleaf lightbars, and others could be upgraded by the manufacturer to become Thread 1.3.0 edge routers. Although Apple and Nanoleaf are already edge routers, they are backwards compatible with older versions of Thread.

Jonathan Hui, vice president of technology at Thread Group, told The Verge:

From a technical standpoint, anything currently operating as a flow border router can be upgraded.

Flow 1.3.0 causes the edge router to appear on the Wi-Fi network. [network] just like any other Wi-Fi device, allowing any existing device on the Wi-Fi network to communicate with these Thread devices without the need for special software.

With the Thread 1.3.0 update, the Thread Edge Router feature is now the standard. This allows edge routers from different manufacturers to easily connect to the same Thread network.
