A headless chicken, do you believe it? Well, can you believe it actually happened, in the United States, in the 1940s…
Do you know the incredible story that took place on September 10, 1945 in Colorado in the United States, and more precisely on Lloyd Olsen’s farm? The farmer voluntarily cut off the head of one of his chickens named Mike. With a neck higher than the norm, he hoped to obtain a nice piece of meat. A godsend for him this chicken! But that was reckoning without a little unforeseen…
To slaughter the animal, the farmer used an axe. But this instrument has deviated, very slightly certainly, but enough so that the jugular vein remains intact, as well as an ear and the brainstem. On top of that, a blood clot had formed and therefore prevented the chicken from bleeding to death. The result of all this? He was able to survive without his head, to the surprise of the farmer, who finally fed him by pouring milk or water directly into his esophagus, using a pipette.
In another surprise, and not least, Chicken Mike became a luxury chicken, a fairground phenomenon, which brought in the Olsen farm family $4,500 a month, until he ended up choking to death eighteen months later !
