For people who dangle between Google and Apple smart home platforms, the Starling Home Hub is a must on your home network. Once installed, every Nest and Google Home device you own becomes available in HomeKit. I’ve been using this product for several years now and it’s constantly updated with new features at no additional cost. Today, version 11.4 of Starling Home Hub adds support for virtual weather sensors in HomeKit.

After installing firmware update version 11.40, simply go back to the Starling web app and you will find the option to enable this feature under Nest Home and Product Settings. As long as Starling Home is connected to HomeKit, it will add new outdoor temperature and outdoor humidity sensors to your HomeKit environment. It will fetch data using data from the Nest weather service. This feature will allow you to view ambient conditions in the Home app or trigger automation based on temperature.

It gives you the functionality of traditional HomeKit outdoor temperature and humidity sensors without having to install anything in your home, change batteries, or control another device. Firmware version 11.4 also includes improved customization options for managing multiple homes and an increase in the number of Nest cameras in HomeKit Secure Video from 8 to 10.

If you already have a Starling Home Hub, go to http://setup.starlinghome.io on your local network to start the upgrade. If you have automatic updates enabled, they will be released within the next week.

The Starling Home Hub is sold as a one-time purchase with no subscription for $99. If you have multiple Google Home or Nest devices at home, I highly recommend them if you want to pair them with HomeKit.
