If Netflix launched its upcoming advertising-financed subscription today, much of the licensed content on the service would be missing, as the company must negotiate with the studios before it can be included.
That’s what Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos says Deadlinebut says he does not think the missing content is a “material disadvantage” for the upcoming cheaper subscription.
Netflix’s self-produced material will of course be included, and what will be missing from licensed movies and series will vary from country to country as the Netflix catalog looks very different in different countries. In some countries the company has almost nothing but its own material, while in the USA, for example, there is a lot.
The advertising subscription is part of Netflix’s fight to counter declining subscriber numbers and password sharing – over 100,000,000 users today are said to watch Netflix via someone else’s subscription.
