Apple will pay $50 million to settle a 2018 class-action lawsuit over faulty butterfly keyboards used in MacBooks between 2015 and 2019, Reuters reported.

The plaintiffs were laptop buyers from California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Washington. They claim that Apple knew about the faulty butterfly mechanism and covered it up by continuing to sell computers with such a keyboard.

Recall that in June 2018, Apple launched a free repair program for the butterfly keyboard in MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air for four years after the first sale. At the same time, the company replaces butterfly keyboards with a similar component, so many customers have experienced this problem again after a while. This is also stated in the claim. In 2020, Apple had to return to scissor keyboards.

The lawsuit only applies to clients in the aforementioned states, and lawyers expect maximum payouts of $395 for a client who has replaced a keyboard multiple times, $125 for users who have replaced a keyboard once, and $50 for anyone who has replaced multiple individual keys. The settlement agreement is preliminary and must be approved by the judge hearing the case.
