Obviously, Apple is getting stronger and stronger on the road of self-developed processors, so that they can completely lead the industry, which makes it very difficult for their peers to do.
Apple’s 2020 launch of the M1 is the start of a new line of Macs, ensuring the company will never have to rely on another CPU supplier, and its current offerings far outperform. To date, no competitor has offered the same capabilities found in similar products, leading one analyst to believe that Apple has a three-year lead in the ARM-based processor market.
With the M2 already at the heart of the latest 13-inch MacBook Pro, it’s only a matter of time before a more powerful version is released, and more Macs and iPad Pros will use it in the future. While Qualcomm continues to supply the ARM notebook market with its Snapdragon series of chipsets, those chipsets are nowhere near what the M1 brings in terms of performance and power efficiency.
In a market similar to Apple’s, Qualcomm has only a 3 percent revenue share, according to report author Sravan Kundojjala, director of technology services for mobile components at Strategy Analytics.
Apple has established itself as the market leader in ARM-based laptop processors with almost 90% revenue share. Apple’s M-series processor line has set a benchmark that puts Apple 2-3 years ahead of other ARM-based PC processor suppliers. In 2021, Qualcomm will gain just 3% revenue share in the ARM-based laptop processor market and trail Apple in CPU performance.
What’s more interesting is that Apple is also chasing the high-performance computing market with the M1 Ultra, which will likely be replaced by a more powerful chip designed for the upcoming redesign of the Mac Pro.
