Apple has granted a new patent for a technology to use the iPhone as a temporary relay for wireless communication, reports Patently Apple.
The technology can use both mobile radio and wifi and means that one or more Iphones can transmit signals from a place that has coverage to a phone in a place that does not have coverage.
In the patent, Apple provides emergency services as an example: Firefighters in a building or tunnel where the mobile network has too weak coverage could maintain active contact with the line outside using one or more relay devices.
The technology could also be useful when mobile masts have been knocked out, for example after earthquakes, storms and major fires. But as usual when it comes to patents and Apple, we can not count on the technology ever being included in the Iphone.
