PCGH reported on Blade Runner Enhanced more than two years ago. Now the Steam page is promising a surprisingly timely release.
Is the Blade Runner Enhanced Edition really coming in two days? At least that’s what she lets Steam website for the remaster of the former Westwood classic. The 23.06.2022 has recently been emblazoned here as the start date. Also the Nintendo eShop shows this date, the price is around 10 euros.
Is the remaster coming this week?
A final confirmation by a press release would of course be even more meaningful, but actually there is little reason to believe that Blade Runner Enhanced will not start on Thursday at 7 p.m. After all, the remake/remaster specialist Nightdive Studios has been working on the Westwood classic for some time, which was released in 1997 during the heyday of the studio known for C&C, Dune 2 and Lands of Lore.
Westwood: A look back at the legendary studio from C&C, Dune 2 and Blade Runner
The Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition promises a “true restoration of the classic adventure game”, plus the reconstruction and processing of the original Westwood VQA videos, video frame rates increased from 15 to 60 fps, a “modern” HD display, an improved User interface and hints user interface, improved subtitles support, modern gamepad support, SMAA anti-aliasing and anisotropic texture filtering. It hasn’t been demonstrated for a long time what that looks like in motion, but if the release really takes place on Thursday, it should only be a matter of time.
The September 2020 initial render sequence video comparison had mixed feedback. The video on the left was from the original and ran at 15 frames in 640 x 480 pixels, while the Enhanced Edition on the right ran at a maximum of 60 fps in 4K resolution. The loss of sharpness of detail was criticized at the time. If you want to play the original, you have alternatives at hand thanks to ScummVM emulation or the GOG version of Blade Runner.
Nightdive Studios relies on its in-house KEX engine, which specializes in bringing ports from classic players into a modern guise. The aim is a restoration of the original with regard to modern technology. Content, scenes or audio tracks should not be changed. When it comes to gameplay, there should only be adjustments that are up to date, including gamepad support.
