The two relatively new American space companies Impulse Space and Relativity Space have presented plans to carry out an unmanned mission to Mars in a few years.
Both companies are founded by SpaceX veterans who have known each other for more than a decade. Relativity Space’s focus is on developing reusable rockets that are manufactured in huge 3D printers, while Imulse Space, a company founded in the autumn of 2021, is still focusing on developing engines for satellites.
During the companies’ trip to Mars, the idea is that the Relativity Space Terran-R rocket will launch a Mars spacecraft developed by Impulse Space. It is about a spacecraft that will also be able to land on the red planet and be able to carry out various research experiments there.
The plan is to carry out the Mars mission as early as 2024, something that the companies admit is a rather “aggressive” schedule. If you succeed in getting to Mars, it will be the first private space mission to get there. If you also made a successful landing on the planet, you would be the third to succeed in doing so after the USA and China.
Above, you can check out a concept film that shows how the Impulse Space and Relativity Space missions to Mars are intended to be carried out. Below is a sketch of what the Mars lander might look like.
