For centuries, many women have participated in scientific discoveries. Unfortunately, the work of these women is not appreciated, even denied, because of gender inequality. However, they have carried out remarkable and even innovative research work. This gap is visible even in other areas. Faced with this unfortunate situation, a new study has emerged to determine the origin of this problem.

Studies conducted to find out the reason for this inequality

It is in the United States that this study published in the journal Nature was conducted. The researchers therefore analyzed administrative data, including job titles and grants. These documents would belong to 9,778 research teams distributed in 36 American universities. The files studied dated from 2013 to 2016. In total, the researchers discovered 39,426 articles and 7,675 patents belonging to 128,859 people. So they found that women made up 48% of the scientific workforce within the data set. And only 35% were the authors of several articles. Few works have been published compared to those of men.

Before this study, previous articles have already denounced this inequality between the sexes. In effect, women are less likely to be quoted in an article. There is therefore a 20% less chance that they will be among the people congratulated for scientific research. This study is mainly based on the position occupied, but also on the size of the team. Moreover, the position occupied by the woman is also an evaluation criterion for women in the scientific field.

Study finds women are sidelined

To better understand how this system works, the researchers interviewed about 971 scientists about the authorship of their work. The study therefore revealed that approximately 43% of women and 38% of men said they had been excluded from authorship of an article they had worked on. The most common reason for this exclusion is discrimination and about 49% of women mentioned it.

Following this vision of society, women scientists tend to publish less than men. Yet society claims that women are less productive than men. Moreover, women prefer to occupy rather subordinate positions. But after this study, the women stopped producing scientific articles as these will not be published and will not be recognized.

Many women scientists deserve recognition for their research and work. Here are 36 exceptional women scientists who have marked our world forever.
