The red stamp used for day-ahead mailing services will be phased out early next year, replaced by a printing and e-letter delivery service. The Green Letter is maintained, but its distribution deadline will be extended by one day.

If you often send letters using the famous red stamp for fast shipping, you’re going to have to change your habits. From January 1, 2023, this stamp will no longer be offered by La Poste. For a D+1 type dispatch (delivery in theory the following day), an e-Letter will have to be used, that is to say a remote printing service for digital mail.

You will need to go to the laposte.fr site, or to a post office (on a machine, or with the help of an adviser), to send your document in digital form. The operation must be carried out before 8 p.m. for a reception the next day. The document will then be printed near the recipient’s address, put in an envelope bearing a red stamp design and distributed.

This remote printing service will obviously raise the question of respect for privacy, which will only be possible, for example, if the printing and enveloping operation is fully automated. In addition, documents must be stored on secure servers. Questioned by our colleagues from AFP, the boss of the Service-Mail-Parcels branch of La Poste assured that the operations would be carried out “in complete confidentiality”. Philippe Dorge specifies that “D+1 volumes have been divided by 14 since 2008”. They currently represent 300,000 items out of the seven billion letters sent each year, which is starting to be expensive, but also having an environmental impact. Indeed, the group uses for these shipments planes, trucks and vans which are less and less full.

The Red e-Letter will be invoiced from 1.49 euro (for 1 to 3 sheets), against 1.43 euro for the current priority letter. This price includes the cost of the paper and the envelope. The customer will be able to consult his mail history and use model letters to carry out his administrative procedures.

In accordance with the postal and electronic communications code, La Poste has sent Arcep (the regulatory authority for electronic communications, postal services and press distribution) the changes it envisages for its range of offers under the universal service. In its opinion, Arcep underlined the essential nature of information with regard to users. It thus noted the importance of La Poste communicating with its customers so that they can find out about the offers that will be available to them from 1 January 2023 and the conditions under which these can be used. On the other hand, Arcep gave no opinion on the confidentiality aspect of the Red e-Letter. However, La Poste is not at its first attempt since it already offers an online service for sending registered letters.

The service of green letter continues with stamps at the same price of 1.16 euros (up to 20 g), but the delivery time goes from D+2 to D+3. It will be possible to use a standard stamp or to write on the envelope a code generated in digital form. A follow-up option is charged 0.5 euro. According to La Poste, the development of the red e-Letter and the green letter on D+3 will enable savings of 60,000 tonnes of CO2 per year by 2030, which represents a reduction of 25% compared to current offers.

Finally, for large shipments, La Poste offers the new service Turquoise letter Services Plus from 2.95 euros (price varies according to weight). This service concerns letters, but also small objects (up to 2 kg). It includes tracking (both sender and receiver), pick-up from mailbox, and excessive delay compensation.
