Tea bags have become a very useful invention, allowing you to quickly brew a delicious and tonic drink. And although this little pouch is considered disposable, nothing prevents you from using it again and again. It’s no secret that many of us brew tea bags repeatedly. Some do it out of a desire to save money, while others do it for rational reasons. Why throw away a bag if it can make more than one cup of tea?

How many times can tea bags be brewed
This approach is the only one that causes a lot of controversy. Some say that repeated brewing of tea makes it almost a poison, provoking numerous diseases, from ulcers to impotence. Fans of tea ceremonies, in principle, are contemptuous of such bags, but at the same time they consider repeated brewing to be quite natural. There is an opinion that for bagged tea, in general, there is a third-rate product and almost tinted dust. And the fabric of the bags itself raises questions – is it safe for use in hot water? Or maybe the myths about the dangers of repeated brewing are cultivated by the tea manufacturers themselves, spurring their sales?
The experts decided to check whether tea bags of different brands can be brewed several times. The specialists were interested in whether something useful would remain in the cup after numerous brews. In testing, tea bags of the ten most popular brands in Russia were used. At the first brewing, most of the bags made the water a rich amber color in twenty seconds. But this is not indicative at all – some expensive teas even need to be brewed several times to reveal the taste. The first ablution with boiling water only soaks the leaves with water and awakens them, and the second brewing releases valuable essential oils. And the color of the tea leaves cannot be considered a clear indicator of the quality of tea. Its taste is determined by essential oils and tannins, but there can be a lot of them in a pale-colored drink. Natural dyes are responsible for its formation.
But is there any practical use for this? Do the sachets deliver the right dose of tannins and caffeine the next time you brew? Tests have shown that significant amounts of nutrients are retained only during the first three brews. All further attempts to brew tea deprived it of tonic substances, giving the drink only color.

Plastic tea bags can be dangerous
Heavy use of plastic tea bags may not be safe, scientists say. Hot water causes the bag to release several billion micro- and nano-plastic particles. Such a “broth” for our body will hardly be useful. No wonder tea fans recommend brewing it without any bags.
These are unbiased scientific conclusions. But sometimes you really want tea, and the shops are no longer working … And it will obviously not be a crime to re-brew a bag for the sake of forming a cozy home gathering.
