Beijing time on June 22 news, Microsoft said on Tuesday,Will stop selling technology that guesses someone’s emotions based on images of facesand no longer offers unrestricted access to facial recognition technology.
Microsoft’s actions show the leading cloud provider is trying to control sensitive technology on its own as lawmakers in the U.S. and Europe continue to weigh sweeping legal restrictions. Since at least last year, Microsoft has been evaluating whether the emotion recognition system is rooted in science.
“These efforts raise important questions about privacy, the lack of consensus on the definition of ’emotion’, and the inability to generalize the link between facial expressions and emotional states across use cases, regions, and demographics.” Chief Sector Product, Azure AI, Microsoft Manager Sarah Bird said in a blog post.
Existing customers will have a one-year transition period after which they will not be able to use the AI tools, Microsoft said. The tool can purportedly infer mood, gender, age, smile, facial hair, hair and makeup.
Microsoft also said customers must now be approved to use its facial recognition service, which lets people log in to websites or open locked doors using facial scans. Microsoft is urging customers to steer clear of privacy violations or situations where the technology might have difficulty, such as identifying minors, but doesn’t explicitly prohibit those uses.
