A nearly ten-second clip from Return to Monkey Island fuels the discussion about the changed graphic style again. The new Guybrush Threepwood strolls over a well-known jetty on Voodoo Island in the video.
Hardly has the heated discussion about the graphic style of Return to Monkey Island calmed down a bit, when a ten-second video clip ensures that the fronts between supporters and opponents harden again.
Tweet with lots of feedback
Getting the ball rolling was Return to Monkey Island co-creator Dave Grossman, who shared Guybrush Threepwood’s 10-second walk on Voodoo Island on Twitter. The main character of the Monkey Island series walks from left to right on a well-known jetty, passes a ship and even the Scumm Bar. Grossman writes: “New surveillance video for #MonkeyIslandMonday! A strange man is striding purposefully on the Melee dock, ignoring the pelicans and the bar as if he must be somewhere with a fiendish puzzle to solve. @grumpygamer: Did you see that ?”. The answer is “I’ll run it through the face recognition neural network and see if we can identify him”.
grumpygamer is Ron Gilbert personally and it shouldn’t be a coincidence that Grossman brings his buddy Gilbert into the game in this way, who actually didn’t want to comment on the graphic style of Return to Monkey Island. However, he does respond to many fan questions, including Gilbert confirming that the scene is in-game footage rendered in real time. He also confirms that a lot of time has been spent on the in-game running speed to ensure it meets the game’s requirements. Also, while it’s great not to have to worry about hard drive space and RAM when developing games today. “Everything else” is much more difficult these days, says Gilbert.
In addition to many positive comments that celebrate the scene almost euphorically, there are also negative reactions. As one user writes: “Monkey Island: Adobe Flash Animation Edition. Feels like 2009 in a bad way. I’m sure the rest of it will be great, but damn it, that misguided graphic choice is the crux of the matter game”. Another user writes: “I’m disappointed too. I was expecting the graphic style of the extended editions (Monkey Island 1 and 2) to bring harmonization. And it would be great if you could switch to the pixel art style.” . In view of the previous statements by Ron Gilbert, who has shown himself to be quite self-confident when choosing the graphics, a pixel art switcher should be extremely unrealistic.
