Uwe Seeler, the honorary captain of the German national football team, died on Thursday at the age of 85, his former club SV Hamburg said, citing his family. The prolific striker Seeler featured at four World Cups, scored 43 goals in 72 caps and was the captain of the West Germany team that lost the 1966 final against England at Wembley. He spent his entire club career at SV Hamburg 1953-1972, scoring 507 goals in 587 career games, won the national title with them in 1960 and reached the European Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1968.
