The world’s largest technology companies, including Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Netflix, Spotify, TikTok and Twitter, have agreed to provide Indonesian authorities with the personal data of local users and remove content prohibited in the country.
According to the Financial Times, the signing of the agreement means that local authorities can require the removal of content if it violates “public order”, as well as request access to users’ data. A total of 207 different companies signed the agreement just hours before the law went into effect.
The Indonesian authorities left the companies no other choice, since the refusal to sign the agreement threatened with fines and a complete ban on activities in the country.
