Mid-range smartphones have a hand to play as budgets shrink due to inflation. The iPhone SE 3rd generation represents a solid but lackluster proposition, which opens up a boulevard for other manufacturers and Google intends to rush into it. The Pixel 6a is indeed in pre-order since today and until July 27, then the device will then be available in stores.

The smartphone, announced last May at Google I/O, costs 459 € and until August 1, Google adds the headphones Pixel Buds A-Series as a gift (the iPhone SE costs €529). The device borrows from the Pixel 6 the “house” Tensor chip which ensures good performance, supported by 6 GB of RAM.

The Pixel 6a incorporates a 6.1-inch OLED screen (2,400 x 1,080, 429 ppi), an 8-megapixel photo sensor in a hole in the front, a photo block protected by a wide bar on the back — the ‘signature’ design of the range – which houses a 12.2 megapixel (ƒ/1.7) main camera and a 12 megapixel (ƒ/2.2) ultra-wide-angle camera. Above all, it benefits from Google’s expertise in machine learning to improve photos.

We also note, jumbled up, the presence of a USB-C port (but no jack), support for 5G and a fingerprint sensor under the screen. Everything obviously works with a “stock” version of Android 12 with insurance receive system updates through July 2025 and security updates through July 2027.
