Yu Hua, born on April 3, 1960 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, is a native of Haiyan County, Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province. He is a contemporary Chinese writer and a member of the Committee of the Chinese Writers Association. In 1978, after failing the college entrance examination, he entered the health center as a dentist. In 1983, he published his first short story “The First Dormitory”.
Yu Minhong, born on September 4, 1962 in Xiagang Street, Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, is the founder of New Oriental Education Group and an expert in English teaching and management. He serves as chairman of New Oriental Education Group, co-founder of Hongtai Fund, vice-chairman of China Young Entrepreneurs Association, and member of All-China Youth Federation.
In 1978, Yu Minhong failed the college entrance examination with only 33 points in English. Yu Minhong’s mother was not reconciled. After learning that a local junior high school lacked English teachers, she just went to the door and asked Yu Minhong to serve as an English substitute teacher in the junior high school, with the intention of not only getting some income, but also reviewing for exams.
In 1979, for the second time in the college entrance examination, he failed again. This time, he scored 55 points in the English test. After two failures, Yu Minhong decided to give up. But Yu Minhong’s mother heard that the county government was running a remedial class for the college entrance examination, and looked around for connections to let Yu Minhong attend this remedial class. Yu Minhong’s original goal was to get into a junior college in Jiangsu’s local teachers’ college, but his grades skyrocketed during the college entrance examination, so he enrolled in Peking University.
