In the vehicle power battery market, CATL, a Chinese manufacturer, has the largest global market share, surpassing South Korea’s LG New Energy and Japan’s Panasonic. In addition, the cost and quality of batteries in the CATL era are very competitive. Now, they have taken away customers from LG and SK On in the Korean domestic market.
A few days ago, it was reported that Kia Motors, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group,CATL has selected batteries from CATL for its NIRO crossover pure electric SUV, which will be sold in South Korea.Kia’s move is aimed at expanding its range of power battery suppliers, as well as taking into account the cost of new cars.
On June 23, in response to the news of supplying Kia, CATL responded to the media, “The news is true.”
It is reported that the electric vehicles sold by Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors in the Korean market previously used batteries produced by Korean companies, including LG New Energy (LGES) and SK Innovation’s SK On. After the introduction of CATL batteries in the local market for the first time, this supply relationship will be broken.
In addition, in March last year, Hyundai Motor announced that due to fire accidents, a total of 81,701 related electric vehicles such as KONA and IONIQ electric versions were recalled globally.
The cause of the vehicle’s fire was that some of the high-voltage battery system components were defective. The battery supplier is South Korea’s LG Chem, which will also bear 70% of the cost of the recall.
Because of this recall incident, Hyundai Motor has some doubts about the safety and security of LG Chem’s battery supply capacity in South Korea. This time CATL won the order from Kia, which may also have something to do with it.
According to public data, the top ten global power battery installed capacity in 2021 are: CATL, LG New Energy, Panasonic, BYD, SK On, Samsung SDI, AVIC (AVIC Lithium), Guoxuan Hi-Tech, Envision Power, Honeycomb energy.
CATL has the largest market share, with a global installed capacity of 96.7GWh and a market share of 32.6%, ranking first in the world. At the same time, this is also the Ningde era, and it has been on the throne of the world’s largest power battery company for the fifth consecutive year.
