Voting in elections while an American astronaut may seem impossible to some. Nevertheless, it is quite doable. Indeed, did you know that for several years NASA astronauts have also been able to vote… from space?

At the time of the American elections, millions of individuals participate. But how does this play out for citizens living in orbit? For several years now, NASA astronauts have had the chance to vote from space.

Astronauts living aboard the International Space Station are actually permitted by Texas law to file a encrypted digital ballot before the end of the American votes. “This is a secure ballot sent directly to the voting authorities”, explained Jay Bolden, spokesman for NASA on the site Space.com.

This law drafted in 1997 in Texas was inspired by the astronauts residing near Houston. This remote voting system was used for the very first time that same year during a local election by David Wolf who was then on the Russian station Mir. Subsequently, in 2004, Leroy Chiao was the first American citizen to participate in the election of a president from space.
