Samsung Electronics has introduced a new 200-megapixel sensor with the smallest pixels to date, which will allow phone manufacturers to keep their phones as thin as possible. HP3, as the sensor is called, offers autofocus for each pixel, pixel binding that combines several pixels into one for better performance in low light and multi-gain ISO for maximum dynamic range. The sensor is 1 / 1.4 inch large, which is quite large for a smartphone but extremely small for a 200 megapixel sensor. The pixels should be 0.56 micrometers in size, 20 percent smaller than last year’s ISOCELL HP1 which was 0.64.

In addition to high-resolution images, the sensor can also handle 8K video 30 fps and 4K 120 fps. It also offers 14-bit color depth (4 trillion colors), a quadruple compared to most smartphone sensors 12-bit depth.

Mass production will start this year, but it will probably take until 2023 before we can then use 200-megapixel phones with the sensor.
