FlatPanelsHD has revealed that a future generation of Apple TVs will be able to display in 8K, a significant improvement over current 4K resolutions.

The iOS 16 and tvOS 16 betas have made references to the AV1 video codec, which provides significant improvements to video streaming on Apple platforms and support for 8K resolution. It is likely that Apple will activate support for the AV1 codec in a future OS update for iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

The company is also rumored to be developing a new TV box with the A14 Bionic chip that will be able to stream 8K video via an HDMI 2.1 port. The new generation of Apple TV is expected to be released this fall.
