IT House June 23 news, yesterday Northwestern Polytechnical University issued a statement saying that recently, the school’s e-mail system suffered a cyber attack, which had a negative impact on the school’s normal teaching life. The school called the police immediately, and the public security organs initially determined that it was a network attack launched by overseas hacker organizations and criminals. Today, the Beilin Branch of the Xi’an Public Security Bureau issued a police report, and a case has been opened for investigation.

At about 15:00 on April 12, 2022, the Taibai Road Police Station of our bureau received an alarm from the Information Construction and Management Office of Northwestern Polytechnical University, saying that the school’s email system found a group of scientific research reviews, defense invitations and going abroad notices. Phishing emails, which contain Trojan horse programs, lure some teachers and students to click on the link, and illegally obtain the login permissions of teachers and students’ email addresses, resulting in the risk of related email data being stolen. At the same time, traces of cyber attacks were also found on the personal Internet computers of some faculty members. The above behaviors of sending phishing emails and launching network attacks pose a major security threat to Northwestern Polytechnical University’s on-campus information system and important data of teachers and students. After receiving the alarm, our bureau immediately organized the cyber security team to carry out investigation and evidence collection, initially grasped the relevant facts, extracted samples of Trojan horse programs and phishing emails, and fixed relevant evidence in accordance with the law.

At present, our bureau has filed a case for investigation in accordance with the provisions of Article 285 of the Criminal Law of the People’s Republic of China, and further conducted technical analysis on the samples of Trojan horses and phishing emails extracted. It is preliminarily determined that this incident is a cyber attack initiated by overseas hacker organizations and criminals.

Police reminder: Network security is no trivial matter. When any individual or organization encounters behaviors that endanger network security, they have the right to report to the local public security organ’s cybersecurity department in accordance with Article 14 of the Cybersecurity Law of the People’s Republic of China. Resolutely crack down on relevant illegal and criminal acts in accordance with the law.
