IKEA continues to dig into augmented reality with the addition of a decorating assistant feature in its iOS app (coming to Android later this summer). Contrary to what is proposed with IKEA Square where we position a 3D object in a room to evaluate it from every angle, here we will furnish an entire room, even if it is already full. The app will erase everything in it to let you install new virtual furniture.
This function is called Kreativ Scene Scanner, it is integrated in the IKEA app main. It is currently only offered from the home page of the app when it is in the American version. All you have to do is change the region setting in the app’s preferences to make it appear. Then it is not essential to have an iPhone or an iPad equipped with a Lidar, but it will improve the result (I used an iPhone 13 mini).
The first step is quite tedious and can take 4 or 5 minutes, but the app guides you very clearly. After having chosen the profile of the room (office, living room, bedroom…), it consists in scanning it by holding and slightly moving the iPhone in front of you.
We do it from a fixed position, we don’t walk around. Then the app asks you to align the real view with the captured images and draw an infinity sign with your phone or iPad.
Once done, the result should be sent to IKEA for processing. I quickly created an account from the app (last name, first name and address) and after about 10 minutes, the app retrieved the room scene, ready to be modified.
The app offers to empty the room by removing the furniture and objects that have been detected. We can clean up or leave the elements that are not intended to change. We will then fill in the places by drawing from the IKEA catalog. The pieces of furniture are positioned manually and they are rotated precisely on themselves thanks to a ruler for the final adjustment. Once satisfied with the result, the layout can be saved and the shopping list is ready for an order.
After searching through the integrated catalogue, we changed the table and the chairs, installed two shelves and a piece of sofa in a corner. We will not see this room from another angle, since the scanning stage only captured the place from a single point of view. It can be limiting, or enough to get a general idea depending on the project.
The same can be done from a web browser on his Mac. Once the scene has been analyzed on the server side, you have the choice between continuing in the iOS app or retrieving a link to open the web editor on your computer. The second option gives access to a few more things, such as wall units, mattresses, beds and pillows.
This new feature will be available to non-Americans sometime next year. But by modifying the settings as indicated above you can already use it when you have a project in mind, this will at least make things a little rougher.
