When Apple showed off the next generation CarPlay during WWDC, it seemed that many car manufacturers were on the train, but after this it has turned out that this may not be the case. Shortly after WWDC asked The Verge several of the companies that were in the picture with all the logos if they were to support the new CarPlay. The answers were not entirely trustworthy, yesterday The Verge interviewed Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius who answered like this when he was asked about the new CarPlay:
“I think Mercedes customers expect access to a holistic Mercedes-Benz universe. It is not just about the physical product; it is also about the digital interface. You have your Mercedes me ID, and with that, you can turn on the air conditioning or the heating in the car from the sofa in your living room … We will see what we do with them. We will have to discuss that. Our clear goal is to have a Mercedes experience through and through. “

How the other manufacturers responded can be read here.

These cars will fully support CarPlay

In the future

Yesterday, Apple presented iOS 16, but they also showed a sneak peek at the upcoming CarPlay. They also showed a screen with different car brands, but it was a bit unclear how committed these car brands really were. So we asked. The answer is that these brands will release models that have the total CarPlay experience. Of course, they do not have to drop the support for all models in their range and it will probably be the case that only new models will receive the support. A pile of brands drives Google basically for its systems, including Volvo and Polestar. Google and Apple may not be direct enemies, but it’s still interesting that Google Automotive will fully support CarPlay. The flora of manufacturers is also interesting. Volvo and Polestar are not really that surprising, except for the Google thing. They want to be at the forefront so have no reason not to support. Audi and Porsche are included but not Volkswagen, Skoda and the others in the group. I suspect that the electric cars that come on the PPE platform, including the Audi A6 etron and Porsche Macan, will get new CarPlay, but cars like the Porsche Taycan, 911, Audi Q4 will probably retain the old, somewhat limited experience. Renault and their friends Nissan and Infiniti are involved. Exactly what that means and to what extent they will be involved I do not know. Renault runs Google in some of its cars. Jaguar and Land Rover are in the same group and are a bit like Volvo and Polestar, they have nothing to lose by building in the support. The same goes for Ford, Lincoln and Honda / Acura. Mercedes is a bit surprising. They have worked hard on their system and I might not have guessed that they would be involved so early, but it’s fun that they are involved.

Apple demonstrates next-generation CarPlay

Takes over the whole car!

The rumor that Apple was working on a new version of CarPlay that can do more than just control the media in the car was true. The new CarPlay takes over all screens in the car, including the instrument panel. Apple has designed a bunch of different themes with different layouts to suit different types of cars and drivers. As you expect, it should also be possible to adjust such things as the car’s AC and see the car’s range and consumption. Cars with new CarPlay will come to new cars at the end of 2023 according to Apple, car manufacturers that will support new CarPlay include Nissan, Mercedes, Volvo, Polestar and Jaguar.
