American Bernarda Pera continued her break-out season at the age of 27 when she stunned top seed Anett Kontaveit to win the European Open on the Hamburg clay on Saturday. She easily prevailed 6-2, 6-4. It was the Croatia-born player’s second title in 2022 following singles success in Budapest having never won a WTA Tour event previously. The Hamburg event is out of sync with the rest of the calendar, with clay tournaments normally coming in the build-up to the French Open in May and June.
