On Wednesday, Apple released iOS 16 beta 2 to developers, two weeks after the first beta release of iOS 16 announced at WWDC 2022. The update brings a few changes to the system and, interestingly, it also adds a new menu to manage beta software. HomePod to the Home app.
HomePod Beta Software
The menu is hidden by default and only appears if the user has the HomePod beta profile installed. This way, users can easily choose which of their HomePods will receive beta software updates. Previously, you had to set up a beta profile for every speaker in your home.
To choose which HomePods will receive the beta software, you just need to turn on a separate toggle for each speaker. It should then receive a beta update. Turning off the toggle will prevent HomePod from receiving beta updates.
The new menu comes ahead of the new Apple Beta Software Program next month, which will include the HomePod beta software for the first time. Right now, the only way to install beta software on your HomePod is to get an invite through the AppleSeed program. At the moment, even developers cannot install the beta version of HomePod Software 16.
Interestingly, only mini HomePods appear on the new beta menu. This may be because the original HomePod cannot be restored to a Mac if there are any issues with the update. This suggests that the HomePod public beta software will not be available for the original HomePod.
New HomePod Rumors
According to recent rumors, Apple is working on a new HomePod model that is expected to be released sometime between late 2022 and early 2023. found references to an unreleased HomePod model hidden in the iOS 16 code, confirming these rumors.
Details on the new HomePod are unclear at the moment, but analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the new model will be an additional update to the current HomePod mini.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported that Apple is experimenting with HomePod prototypes combined with Apple TV into a single product. However, it looks like this product is far from being ready for the market. There are also rumors about the return of a larger HomePod model.
It’s worth noting that iOS 16 is currently available as developer beta software on the Apple Developer website. An official release is expected this fall.
