In order to verify the age of users, the photo and video sharing social network Instagram announces the testing of new methods. By recalling that users must be at least 13 years old, otherwise registration with Instagram is prohibited.

Teens on Instagram are entitled to a different experience than adults for accessing certain content, and with private accounts by default. They may also receive warnings for conversations with adults whose accounts they follow. In addition, advertising targeting is limited.

First with people who reside in the United States and try to change their date of birth on Instagram to indicate that they are 18 years old or older, they will have to verify their age with the presentation of an identity document which will be deleted from the servers after 30 days.

Social testimonial or AI

In addition to this first option, a second will consist in asking three contacts (themselves adults and with other guarantees) to confirm the age. Instagram thus evokes a social testimony. A third option will rely on a video selfie.

For this video selfie, the images will be shared with the technology of the British company Yoti which will perform an age estimation based on facial features. After this estimate, Meta (Instagram’s parent company) and Yoti will delete the images. Instagram insists that it is not about recognizing an identity.

According to Yoti, its technology requires no human intervention. The age estimation is performed by a neural network that has been trained by analyzing the faces of hundreds of thousands of people, in accordance with the GDPR in the United Kingdom. The technology’s margin of error is announced at 1.52 years for 13-19 year olds and with a success rate of 99.65% for 13-17 year olds.

Yoti claims more than 500 million verifications worldwide, and further puts forward German regulator approval for its technology. To see if the partnership between Instagram and Yoti will quickly concern Europe after the test across the Atlantic.
